That all changed one day, I was checking my email and I received a email from one the sites I belong to that I agreed to receive emails from other members that advertise opportunities that they are promoting.

After doing a little experimenting on two of my offline customers Facebook pages, I discovered that by using a few (as in 1 or 2) keywords and linking to their site they were ranked rather quickly over at Google. Free Facebook backlinks!

Bing also picked them up, but the results were not near as promising. But what the hey, getting on Google is perfectly fine with me. Does not take hardly any time at all, so I highly recommend you give it a try.

You can gain access your notes by going to your main Facebook page (Timeline is best) and scrolling down until the navigation menu appears at top of page. Click “Timeline” and then pick the “notes” link. I am sure there are other ways to get to your notes area, but found this method easiest for me.

Now get on over to Facebook and place a keyword and link to your site for some free and easy backlinks! If I was going to try and rank for “50 Pound Cat”, I would place the words “50 Pound Cat” first in the title area and then something about large cats and then of course link to my “Cat Site” in the body area. Also would not hurt to use the tags area <wink>.

Be SURE to choose share with “Public” for best results.

Chillout and read on to solve this problem…

First thing is to make sure you have setup your application correctly over at Facebook (https://developers.facebook.com/apps/). Once there, click on “Edit App” and then Settings -> Advanced. Down the page a bit is this area in below screenshot. Set both width and height to fluid:

Once you verify these settings look the same as above screenshot, you will need to place the code right below the <body> tag of your iframed page (you can copy the code inside box and also see full example bottom of page):

Once you have placed the above code in page you have iframed in your Facebook app, chances are you will could STILL have a darn vertical scrollbar! Arrrggg. What to do, what to do?

You use to be able to simply add a link (or tab) to your Facebook fanpage with the “Add to my page” link. What the hell are they thinking removing it? Myself, I am getting sick and tired of trying to keep up with their changes. I guess that is the way it is when you are young…

Anyway, here is how to add that newly created app to your fanpage:

1) Go to Facebook and get your “APP ID” and the “Canvas Page” URL
2) Using the URL below, replace my APP ID and page URL with yours:

You will now see the link to the app on your fanage. If you would link for your app to be the first thing people see when landing on the page, edit your page and look for the “Default Landing Tab” drop down menu. Choose your app name and save changes.

- SEO Plugins

The All-In-One SEO Pack. is used on this site and highly recommended. Install, turn it on (activate), and leave the “out of box” settings as is – no configuration needed. There are many options if you want to tweak them but I have never touched and been very happy.

One thing to remember though: No matter how well optimized your site is, the search engines have to find and know when you update it. Install Google Sitemap Generator. Specifically designed to notify Google, Bing and Ask.com. The plugin use to also knock on Yahoo’s door but they now seem to be in bed with another search engine provider.

- Networking

The hard work is done for free traffic right, or is it?

Social networking is a very time consuming process and can bring in tons of free (and instant) web visitors. I personally know people that spend at least 50% of their time working on nothing but networking for free traffic. Crazy if you ask me when most can be automated with WordPress plugins.

Now the question is which to use and how?

Drum row please… Google seems to once again popup and for the time being is a heavy hitter.

The Google +1 Button will allow your visitors to ‘like’ and tell Google that you have information worth telling the world about. Do not, and I mean it, do not pass up putting a +1 button on your site.

“Like” these days seems to belong to Facebook, so lets not forget the giant of social networking, get the Facebook Like Button. Although I am not a huge fan of FB, I still use it and love the free visitors it brings to my site(s).

There are hundreds of “FB Like” and “Google +1” plugins. Take your pick but the two above are the best and easy to use from my experiences.

Oh yea, lets not forget the Tweeters and Twitters out there. Often over looked but Twitter can bring in lots and lots of “instant” traffic. Used correctly you can get some long lasting links for the search engines also. WP Tweet Button is one of my choices, although I do not use it on all my WordPress installs.

I recommend that you include the above social network systems on your WordPress site in some form. Now to throw a wrench in everything, check this out:  AddThis (will need to sign-in or up).

- Speed Up Your Site With Caching

The search engines will like your site better if it is responds quickly. That is a fact and I do not care what any of the “experts” have to say. Caching is a great way to speed things up. Plus if you use shared hosting like at (WebHostRecon) they will love you also.

Second reason I use caching is when posting on sites like Twitter and Facebook it can flood your site with instant traffic. I bring these two up but there are many more and wanted to make a point…

By caching you are ready to get hammered and still serve pages. I will repeat: this is really important when on a shared server. It will make the most important, your visitors happy to have a responsive site and could keep your host provider from sending the dreaded message:  you are consuming too much resources.

I use WP Super Cache plugin on this very site. I have heard and read on forums it is not the best one. But I am old school and it has served me well. Kind of like a older brother, maybe not the best brother in the world but has stood by me.

Rumor (well actually testing) has been posted that Hyper Cache plugin is around 10% more efficient at caching. Setup is simple as can be but like the other plugin above there are lots of extra settings.

Bottom line, use one of the above cache plugins to speed up your site and get some love from your hosting company.

– Spam Protection

Dang spammers! They seem to be everywhere these days and it can ruin a good WordPress site it left open. There are many times you want to have comments turned on, but can be very time consuming to clean them up.

The universal spam stopper plugin Akismet is my pick and use it on all my installs. You will need an Akismet API key to make it work and is free for most. You can donate and help put spam in its place!

Although many do not like the Captcha forms,  SI Captcha for WordPress plugin is my choice on some sites I run. These days spammers can buy programs to bypass most all captcha setups, so keep that in mind. The best way is to use plugins that block spammers by IP’s and email addresses.

For those that allow signups to their WordPress system, I recommend the Stop Spammers Registration Plugin. You can install and register at the recommended databases and cut out most all spammers from getting inside.

These are just a few ways that I optimize my WordPress installs for SEO and user experience. You want to please your visitors and the search engines. Your visitor is number one of course, but the search engines bring you visitors:)

HTML2WP is a super-simple WordPress plugin that takes an existing, static HTML page and turns it into a WordPress page that looks EXACTLY like the original AND that can accept the Widgets of your normal active WordPress theme.

1) Sometimes, you want to upload a salesletter on your WordPress blog, and have it look perfect. You need to upload the HTML file, .css file and images, and get the server “paths” just right with FTP software – something that isn’t the easiest thing in the world, unless you have the necessary technical knowledge.

2) Even if you do manage to upload the page to your server and have it appear properly, that page would mainly be an “island.” It would still be a static HTML page, without any of the cool WordPress Widgets that make the page be fully SEO optimized and a “part” of the whole blog (widgets like “tags”, categories, archives, text areas that rotate banners etc).

3) It’s very difficult to customize an existing WordPress theme and make it look “just right.” And, if you hired a WordPress developer, they would ask you for an arm and a leg to create the HTML “.psd” and then “cut it up” to turn it into a fully-functional WordPress page.

1) From within the plugin (no FTP software like Filezilla needed), you upload a static HTML page that already has the content you want, formatted exactly as you want it. You also upload any .css files and images.

2) IF you want, you can include in your HTML template “tokens” (shortcodes) that will be replaced during the conversion process by WordPress widget-ready areas. For example: [sidebar 1], [footer 1], [footer 2], [footer 3], [footer 4]. You click a button and then the page template is created.

3) You then:

a) go to “Create new page”

b) add a title to the page

c) under “Page Attributes” on the right, select from the “Template” drop-down menu the template you just created (for example: blue-background-salesletter).

d) Click “publish”

Done!

When you combine WordPress and videos, you simply fall into abysmal hole. WordPress + Videos is just a nightmare. It turns WordPress back into an expert platform for coding geeks who like to manipulate obscure lines of codes and tweak them just so that they can publish a video. It makes video the medium most bloggers want to avoid because they have no idea how to handle them.

Can you believe this!? There are millions of blogs online, tens of thousands of developers working on WordPress, and still leveraging the power of videos through blogs is available only to the tech geek fractions of bloggers and internet marketers (needless to say this is a really tiny fraction). Which means 99% of bloggers are left aside and doomed to use good old written content to stand out of the crowd. Talk about a challenge.

To give you an example, simply picture this: You’re creating a blog related to, let’s say “Panic Attack.” You’ve found some good videos on YouTube you want to re-publish on your blog. Easy? WRONG. YouTube will give you an embed code, but most people are stuck from that point on. What to do with this embed code? Most bloggers don’t even know you can switch from Visual to HTML in the WordPress post form. And even those who know there’s an HTML section will freak out just by switching to it and trying to paste that devilish javascripted flashy htmlified code.

Many people are now using Amazon S3 to store their videos. And it’s really awesome. You can centralize and theoretically share all your videos from one central place for a really, really low price. Really great service! But there’s a bug. You’ve created a video, and you’ve uploaded the .swf, .flv or .mp4 (or whatever strange format online videos are using) file to your S3 account.

So what? Most people will never be able to embed this video on their blog. Where can I get a player (and most people don’t even know they need a player to play their videos), how can I embed and configure the player to play my S3 videos. What should be the size of the player, what should be the size of the video, how to configure the position, what happens once the video is finished playiing…Well, you see the point, S3 is great, but it’s just the beginning and it normally becomes really technical to finally publish a video on a blog.
