SGI have a long history of involvement with Hollywood. Having pioneered the special effects industry, SGI’s machines have powered the effects for some of the most successful blockbuster films. Sun Microsystems and SGI both started out as workstation manufacturers, designing some of the first UNIX workstations on the market. Both Sun Microsystems and SGI continued to produce on the knowledge gained from Cray, with Sun producing the SF15k and SF25k machines, aimed at large data centres, and SGI designing the Origin 3000 and Altix supercomputers.

Although the SF15k server line from Sun Microsystems was initially targetted to business, Sun Microsystems quickly realised that they could link these powerful computers and so designed a solution for High Performance Computing (HPC) users. As clustered solutions began to dominate the high performance computing world Sun Microsystems turned to their entry level server machines, applying their clustering and scalability expertise from the top end servers, and creating a range of HPC solutions.

Faced with shrinking markets Silicon Graphics took the same path, designing a line of cheaper products to complement their existing top end high performance computing servers.

With both companies now becoming focussed on Intel and AMD based CPUs, they continue to refine the machines and engineering lessons gained from the Cray purchase by SGI over a decade ago.

These computers were Single System Image (SSI) computers. Despite the large number of CPUs in them, they ran one copy of the IRIX operating system, and behaved to the end user exactly the same way as a normal machine would.

SGI are continuing their development with the current range of Altix scaleable supercomputers, using Intel’s Itanium processor and running Linux. With multi-core Itaniums available stories abound of monster 4096 core SSI systems secreted away in government agencies.
